Montreal | 15 August 2008

After checking into our downtown hotel, we walked to the Mont Royal park and in the setting sun headed back for dinner at a deli, drinks at a bar on Crescent, and coffee and gelato at a restaurant on St-Catherine. We walked along Notre Dame Ouest, which was a wash. We wandered through the Atwater Market, crossed the canal, and walked to Old Montreal along an occasionally-sketchy route populated largely by cyclists. We had crepes on St-Paul and looked in the galleries and boutiques when we weren’t navigating the narrow sidewalks through the crowds of other gawking tourists. I got sunburned that day. We went to the Museum of Fine Arts, had two breakfasts a few times, walked along quiet streets of closed stores after dinner, and just barely managed not to fail to speak any French at all. It didn’t rain as much as we expected.

We left on Wednesday at noon, driving in detour circles to get on the highway, stopped in Kingston for coffee and used book shopping, stopped on the highway around Toronto for bad traffic, and were home in time for a late dinner.
